Dr. Nichols graduated from the University of Iowa with a PhD in medicinal chemistry, he then was a postdoctoral fellow in the Pharmacology Dept at Iowa, followed by researching and teaching Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Purdue University for almost 38 years. With government permission, he synthesized high purity MDMA, DMT, and psilocybin for clinical studies. He has written over 300 scientific publications on psychedelics, dopamine agonists, and more. In 1993 he founded the Heffter Research Institute, which has supported and funded clinical research with psilocybin and led the psychedelic renaissance. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
